Wisbech Town Council is recruiting a new part-time Town Warden as part of its recently launched initiative aimed at improving safety, visibility and community reassurance in the town centre.
The vacancy follows the introduction of the Town Wardens service, a new scheme designed to strengthen engagement with residents, visitors and businesses while helping to tackle issues such as anti-social behaviour.
The service is being delivered by a small team of officers working on high-visibility patrols across Wisbech.
The council is seeking to appoint a part-time Town Warden working 27 hours per week, with a salary of £18,378 per annum, equivalent to an hourly rate of approximately £13.10.
The role will involve flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends, to ensure a consistent presence at key times.
Town Wardens will carry out regular foot patrols in the town centre and other identified hotspot areas, acting as a visible and approachable point of contact.
Duties include providing reassurance to members of the public, offering practical support to individuals who feel unsafe or distressed, and signposting residents and businesses on how to report community safety concerns.
A key part of the role will be relationship-building. Wardens are expected to work closely with local businesses, voluntary groups and community organisations to help resolve issues and improve perceptions of the town centre.
While the wardens do not have police powers, the council stresses that the service is intended to complement existing policing and enforcement, rather than replace them.
The part-time vacancy follows earlier recruitment for a Senior Town Warden, a full-time supervisory post advertised last October with a closing date of 17 October 2025. That role was created to lead and coordinate the new service, oversee patrol activity and supervise other wardens.
Although the council has not issued a formal announcement, it is understood that the senior post has now been filled as the service moves into its next phase.
Wisbech Town Council says it is looking for applicants with experience in enforcement, compliance or regulatory environments, along with strong communication skills and the ability to handle challenging situations calmly and diplomatically.
Successful candidates will need to demonstrate sound judgement, a community-focused approach and a willingness to work both independently and as part of a team.
The council adds that wardens will act as ambassadors for Wisbech, helping to create a welcoming atmosphere while contributing to long-term improvements in community confidence and town centre vibrancy.
Application packs, including the job description, person specification and application form, are available from the Town Clerk. Applications must be made using the official form, as CVs will not be accepted.
The closing date for applications for the part-time Town Warden role is Friday 16 January 2026. For further information or an informal discussion about the post, applicants can contact the Town Clerk at Wisbech Town Council
