A woman from Cambridge came dangerously close to losing her home after falling victim to a sophisticated romance scam involving someone posing as a US television actor.
Local estate agents raised the alarm after the woman approached them to sell her property, explaining she planned to relocate to the United States to marry a man she believed to be a star of the hit police drama S.W.A.T.
Sensing something was wrong, the agents contacted police, fearing the woman was being manipulated into transferring large sums of money abroad.
Cyber and fraud prevention officers quickly stepped in and uncovered that the victim had already sent hundreds of pounds to multiple accounts in both the UK and the US.
She was reportedly preparing to send significantly more after the sale of her home. The woman had even purchased a wedding dress in anticipation of the move.
Police have now implemented safeguarding measures to protect her finances and wellbeing.
Officers say the case highlights the growing threat of romance scams, where fraudsters exploit emotional vulnerability to extract money from victims. These scams often involve impersonating celebrities or public figures to build trust and urgency.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to question any online relationship that quickly escalates to financial requests.
