A 13-year-old boy from Peterborough has been banned from driving after a terrifying motorbike chase through the streets of Yaxley.
Police were on patrol on 27 June following complaints of anti-social riding when they spotted two motorcyclists. As officers moved in, the pair split up – and the 13-year-old sped off, overtaking cars, ignoring roundabouts, and riding well above the 30mph limit.
His reckless riding forced drivers to swerve and even pushed him onto footpaths, putting pedestrians at serious risk. The chase ended when he crashed into a central reservation and ran into a wooded area, where police arrested him.
At Huntingdon Youth Court on 29 October, the boy pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and failing to stop, receiving a five-month referral order and a 12-month driving ban.
PC Harvey Noble of the Huntingdon neighbourhood team said:
“This young individual put lives at risk with his riding. We take residents’ concerns seriously and will continue to target those who think they can ride illegally and irresponsibly on our roads.”
A referral order is the community sentence most often used by the courts when dealing with 10 to 17 year olds, particularly for first time offenders who plead guilty. Referral orders require that an offender must agree a contract of rehabilitative and restorative elements to be completed within the sentence
