The Environment Agency has launched an investigation following allegations that contaminated dredging waste may have been illegally deposited along the riverbank at Creek Road in March, Cambridgeshire.

According to eyewitness accounts, waste material from a dredge on the riverbank down the bottom of Creek Road was transported by several tractors and trailers before being dumped at the riverbank. It is understood the waste originated from a drain on the left-hand side of Creek Road, just before the level crossing, and was described as “heavily contaminated.”

Under environmental regulations, dredged material cannot be transferred and deposited at other sites without proper authorisation. The reported disposal method may have breached these rules.

The Environment Agency confirmed that the matter has been logged as a potential environmental incident and will be investigated.
