Course records broken – including a provisional 2nd fastest female Half Marathon in the UK this year – were just some of the highlights of this year’s Great Eastern Run held in Peterborough on Sunday.

“What a day we had yesterday at this year’s AEPG Great Eastern Run! A massive thank you to everyone who joined us – our event partners along with a huge thank you to our volunteers, sponsors and title sponsors AEPG – all of which without whom the event couldn’t take place,” was how event organisers summed it up.

One of many charities benefiting from the day included Peterborough Women’s Aid who have already met  Nick Dean the Chief Constable at Cambridgeshire Constabulary to receive the cheque from the police team who completed the Great Eastern Run for them.

“What an amazing amount, thank you so much,” said a spokesperson for Women’s Aid after receiving a cheque for £6,040.

Many participants have taken to social media to thank the organisers and praise the arrangements.

Another wrote: “We came from Preston to run. I did the 5k and my husband did the half marathon. Fabulous medals, excellent organisation too. Well done. The volunteers were so friendly.

“A huge thank you to all the marshals and especially the 2 cyclists who kept with the back markers, they were both amazing. Thank you”.

One other described it as “a great event with a totally unique local vibe for such a large occasion.

“The MC at the start was great for keeping everyone informed of the starting procedure which worked like clockwork. Marshals & water stations brilliant as it was getting warm when the sun came out.

“Finally thank you to the local residents who supported everyone and personally my best half marathon performance for 4 years with 1 hour 44 mins & 36 seconds.”

Among many other votes of thanks was this.

“Fantastic event,” she wrote. “Loved the new route, especially running down Bridge Street full of supporters.

“The marshals were great and the support on route was fab. Massive shout out to the Thorney Running Club for all their encouragement and support. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I got a shiny new PB. Thank you!”

Other comments included “thank you, first half for me and my partner and our 10 year old little girl managed 4th lady in the 5k” and “fabulous run for both events for me – thank you to everyone involved”. And “such a magical day” and to sum up from a volunteer point of view “such fabulous stories and resilience from people. A great example of our wonderful city”.
