GALLERY: Peterborough Cathedral 80’s and 90’s Old Skool disco

If you need to use Google to find out the meaning of ‘Old Skool’ music then Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday night wasn’t probably for you. But the 400 enthusiasts who packed into the cathedral for an Old Skool 80s/90s needed no internet search to recognise it was for them.

It was, said organiser Paul Stainton, “a real trip back in time”, and if anyone should know its him – it was his idea to go back down his own memory lane to make it happen.

These days the one-time DJ and former BBC presenter is marketing director for the cathedral, so can be excused maybe for bringing his passion for music to boost the cathedral’s coffers and profile.

“Big shout out to Asif Shaheed on the decks,” he said after the event. “And thanks to Barry Williams and his team at Twisted Audio for the sound and lighting and to Larry Zed Malik for helping to make it happen !

“Lots of love from so many people on the night!”.

And in case you need reminding, Old Skool is also known as disco-rap and, a reliable source (Google), informs us “is the earliest commercially recorded hip hop music and the original style of the genre. It typically refers to the music created around 1979 to 1983, as well as any hip hop that does not adhere to contemporary styles”.

One special mention, of course, was for the cathedral team.

“A big thank you to the team who transform the building overnight back to a cathedral for Sunday services,” was typical of many social media posts on the morning after the night before.
