A historic Victorian railway station is close to reopening after being painstakingly rebuilt nine miles from where it originally stood.
Wansford Road Station, built in 1867 and long fallen into disrepair, had been earmarked for demolition to make way for the now‑abandoned £100 million A47 dual‑carriageway scheme. Instead, an agreement between Nene Valley Railway and National Highways saved it from being lost forever.

The entire limestone building was dismantled in April 2024, with every brick, stone and timber catalogued and transported to a new site in Peterborough. Nearly £200,000 of National Highways funding helped make the relocation possible.
Now rising again under its new name, Woodstone Wharf Station, the structure is nearing completion. The rebuilt station will act as a gateway to both Railworld Wildlife Haven and the NVR, reinstating its original features including the booking office, waiting room and administration rooms.

Stan Bell, who has led the project for The Wansford Road CIO, said the move will breathe new life into an overlooked corner of the city, calling the rescue “too good an opportunity to miss”.
The original line once carried passengers between Stamford and Wansford before closing in 1929. After a spell as a private home, the station slipped into dereliction — until this relocation gave it a second life.
CambsNews has created exclusive timelapse footage showing the entire process, from dismantling to reconstruction, captured over several months.
