The bodies of two dead sphynx cats were found near a ditch on an unnamed road in Balsham, near Cambridge. The discovery was made by a dog walker who found the two dead cats on one side of a ditch, while a cat carrier was found on the opposite side.

They were found on Saturday 16 March at the location of an unnamed road which connects Balsham to Hildersham High Street in the area of Samworth Close.

Whilst the two bodies were not directly next to each other they were very close, one cat was female, and the other was an entire male. A red fabric cat carrier was found on the opposite side of the ditch.

The carrier was partially open and there was faeces inside. Neither the cats nor the carrier were at the location the previous morning.

The bodies were examined by a vet and no signs of trauma were found, and both were a reasonable weight.

The female cat did have poor teeth and it was not possible to determine an age. They were microchipped – one chip is Romanian but neither had details registered.

Both cats had long claws which could be indicative that they were indoor cats.

RSPCA Inspector Rebecca Benson is looking into the incident and said: “The circumstances in which these poor cats were found is very concerning and we are grateful to the dog walker and Cats Protection for reporting this to us and all their help.

“What makes this quite bizarre is that we do not know if the cats were in the carrier when dumped or if they were dead or alive at the time of being left.

“While we can only speculate on the circumstances, If they were in the carrier when they died, there is no sign of trauma that would be indicative of a predator species moving the bodies. So, we do not know how the carrier and bodies ended up on opposite sides of the road.

“As these are quite an unusual breed I am hoping someone will have some information which can help me with my enquiries. I would urge anyone who has any information to contact me on the RSPCA inspector appeal line in confidence on 0300 123 8018.”
