80-year-old stabbing victim dies in hospital

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder

An 80-year-old man has died in hospital, seven days after being stabbed in the neck. The man was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, on February 29 after being critically injured at his home in the village of Hockwold near Mildenhall.

He was later transferred to the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds where he died on March 7.

Emergency services were called to Main Street on Thursday 29 February 2024 just before 9am following reports that a man had been stabbed in the neck.

A man aged in his 20s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre, Norfolk, for questioning.

Ashley Francis, aged 26, and of Whittington Hill, King’s Lynn was subsequently charged with attempted murder.

He was remanded in custody and appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court on Saturday 2 March 2024.

He is due to appear at Norwich Crown Court on Tuesday 2 April 2024.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service.

A Home Office post mortem will take place in due course.
