McCarthy Stone wants to use the site of the former fire station on Hartford Road, Huntingdon, to build 48 luxury retirement apartments. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service quit the site in 2022 to move to a more modern building in Huntingdon.

The site comprises of more than 1.6 acres of land and was offered for sale with a guide price of £1.5 million.

An online consultation for residents to find out and more provide feedback was launched today at www.mccarthystoneconsultation.co.uk/huntington.

“McCarthy Stone is committed to engaging with the local community and has already offered meetings to neighbours of the site and local elected representatives to discuss the proposals,” said a company spokesperson.

McCarthy Stone say they propose to build 48 one and two bedroom retirement apartments.

The development will also include “tailored shared facilities within the building, including a communal lounge, mobility scooter store and high-quality landscaped gardens”.

The company says the Huntingdonshire District Council Local Plan Annual Monitoring Report 2022/3 outlines a growing need for this type of accommodation.

Sam Brownhill, Development Director of McCarthy Stone Midlands said: “We are pleased to reveal our plans to deliver much-needed accommodation in Huntingdon.

“Our proposals would help to address a demand in the area, providing housing choice for older people, whilst freeing up the wider housing market for local families and first-time buyers further down the chain.”

“We are keen to develop a scheme that positively contributes to the local community. We want to hear local views on our proposals before we finalise our planning application. I’d encourage people to go online and view the proposals, where they’ll be able to complete our feedback form.”
