Risk of wildfires over England and parts of Wales raised to ‘very high’

The heatwave and lack of rain combined have created tinder-dry conditions triggering the risk of wildfires in England and parts of Wales. The alert coincides with a fire yesterday evening (14 June) on Eye nature reserve.

Crews were called around 6pm in the evening. The smoke was blowing across the A47 so there were lane closure between Welland Road and the A16.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue reported via their twitter page, “Crews from Stanground and the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade are currently tackling a fire in the Eye Green area of #Peterborough.

Conditions are pretty gruelling for the crews as it’s a warm evening. Firefighters are working very hard to stop the fire spreading.”
“Crews have now left the scene and will be making regular inspections to ensure the fire is fully out and the scene is safe. The A47 closure has been lifted so traffic should now be back to normal. Thanks for your patience.”
