Residents across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are being reminded that urgent NHS dental care appointments are still available, with thousands of extra emergency slots funded to help people get seen faster.
The local NHS says the additional appointments are aimed at those suffering from sudden dental problems that can’t wait — including severe toothache, bleeding gums, swelling, and broken crowns or bridges.
Since April 2025, a huge 14,196 urgent appointments have already been offered through NHS dental practices across the region, including Cambridge, Peterborough, Huntingdonshire, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire.
Unlike routine dentistry, patients don’t need to be registered with one specific practice.
That means anyone needing urgent help can contact any NHS dental provider locally to check for available appointments.
The scheme is part of the national Urgent Dental Programme, designed to make it easier for people to get quick treatment when a dental emergency strikes.
How to Get Help Fast
The NHS says the best route is through NHS 111, either online or by calling.
Advisers will assess symptoms and direct patients to practices offering urgent care. People who already attend a dentist regularly are advised to contact their usual practice first.
When You Should Seek Urgent Dental Care
You can request an urgent appointment if you have:
- A knocked-out tooth or injury
- Severe pain affecting sleep or daily life
- Ongoing toothache that won’t go away
- Swelling or lumps in the mouth
- Heavy bleeding after tooth removal
- A broken filling, crown, bridge or denture
Pam Green, Director of Neighbourhood Health & Partnerships at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICB, said: “We know it can be worrying when a dental problem appears out of the blue, especially if you’re in pain or unsure what to do next. By working closely with local dentists, we want to make it easier for people to get the help they need.”
What Will It Cost?
Urgent NHS dental treatment starts from £27.40 unless patients qualify for free care or support with costs.
Dental care is free for:
- All children under 18
- Under-19s in eligible full-time education
