Fenland: Thieves rip lead off village hall roof

Extensive damage has been caused to a village hall after lead was stripped from the roof.

Murrow Village Hall near Wisbech has been forced to cancel events whilst repairs are carried out.

Cambridgeshire police said the theft happened between 9om on February 21 and 6am the following day.

Police released a photo of the damage and reported “lead was stolen from the Murrow Village Hall roof which caused extensive damage.

“If you witnessed anyone in the area last night (21/02/2023) between the hours of 21:00 hours and 06:00 hours this morning please contact Cambridgeshire Police, quoiting reference number 35/14035/23”.

A quiz night was later cancelled with village hall officials promising “we will advertise ASAP when we able to open again thank you”.

On a social media post, they added: “For everyone that has wondered what was going on…

“So gutted by this.

“Thank you to Policing Fenland for coming out so quickly today, and a huge thank you to Turners Roofing who will be making the building water tight.”

Their statement added: “All events at the hall for the foreseeable future will be cancelled, sorry for any inconvenience caused.

“This is currently a fluid situation, and no further details can be released at this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
