A controlling ex-partner who locked a terrified woman inside their caravan and held a pillow over her face so she could not breathe has been jailed. Richard Chipperfield, 39, of Wood Lane, Ramsey, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday after admitting false imprisonment and intentional strangulation.
Police were called on 15 March last year after a mental health helpline contacted officers with the victim’s consent when she revealed she had been trapped inside the caravan and prevented from leaving.
The woman also disclosed that Chipperfield had become increasingly controlling, checking her phone and even following her to the toilet.
In a terrifying attack in February 2025, Chipperfield held a pillow over her face so she could not breathe and told her: “If I was a woman, I would have killed you.”
Detectives said the victim had been left living in fear due to his violent and coercive behaviour.

DC Aaron Fletcher praised the survivor for coming forward and helping police secure the conviction.
He said: “Chipperfield caused her to live her life in fear, after he trapped her inside the home they shared together, and threatened her if she didn’t comply with his orders.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of Chipperfield’s actions and sends a clear message that violence, abuse, and controlling behaviour will not be tolerated in our county.”
